EU Commission outlines the way forward for forests
Today, the European Commission unveiledthemuch-awaitedEU Forest Strategyas part ofitsFit for 55package- the Commission’slegislative pathwaytocut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

TheForest Strategy, acrucial component of the EU Green Deal,recognises the central role of forests, foresters and the entire forest-based value chain for achieving by 2050 a sustainable and climate-neutral economy and for ensuring that all of ecosystems are restored, resilient, and adequately protected.
Withregard toprotection and restoration,the EU Forest Strategy iscoherent with the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030andreinforces the need tostrictlyprotect all remaining old-growthand primaryforest in Europe.ϲʿֱֳfully supports this targetand urgesstakeholdersto use ourProtected Areas Managementٱǰasahelpful tool tosupportdesignationand monitoring.Furthermore,both the Commission and Member Statesshouldensurefullownershipof the Strategyby allstakeholders,incorporatingthem in the implementationprocessfrom the start.
‘Striking therightbalance between protectingand restoring forestswhilesupporting the bioeconomy throughasustainable useof managed forestswill be key toachieving the goalsofthe ForestsStrategy.ϲʿֱֳ stands ready to facilitate open dialoguesbetween the differentstakeholderswhichwill beneeded tocontribute to the overall success of the strategy,’ said Alberto Arroyo Schnell,Head ofPolicyand Programmeat ϲʿֱֳ Europe.
The Strategy also references the importance of restoring degraded forest ecosystems andlinks to theupcoming legally binding restoration targets will play a key role in enhancing forest ecosystems protection in the EU.
Overthe coming months, EU ministers willhavetheir say on the Strategy.We hope that theyfullysupportthe targetsand commit toswiftimplementationfor the benefit of people and planet.
