ϲʿֱֳ and Newmont complete biodiversity net gain review in Suriname and extend collaboration

Gland, Switzerland, and Denver, Colorado, USA – ϲʿֱֳ, International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM, TSX: NGT, ASX: NEM, PNGX: NEM) (Newmont or the Company) have extended their collaborative agreement signed in 2018 until 2027 to work on a nature strategy for Newmont’s mining activities that would build on lessons from biodiversity net gain reviews and aim to deliver high-integrity contributions to the Nature Positive agenda.

Latest in a series of biodiversity reviews at Newmont sites now published

As part of the agreement signed in 2018, Newmont enlisted ϲʿֱֳ and its experts – including representatives of ϲʿֱֳ Member organizations and Commissions – to conduct independent biodiversity reviews at select mine sites, using the.

Since the collaboration began, ϲʿֱֳ-led review teams have evaluated four Newmont sites:Nevada operations (USA) in 2018, Boddington (Western Australia) in 2019 and Akyem (Ghana) in 2022, and most recently, Merian (Suriname) in March 2024.

Each review included a comprehensive evaluation of biodiversity programs and resulted in recommendations for improvement and future direction. The summary report for the Merian site is available here.

ϲʿֱֳ-Newmont collaborative agreement extended

ϲʿֱֳ and Newmont decided to extend their collaboration ahead of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), held in Cali (Colombia) in October 2024. The conference took stock of the progress made since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework two years before, and confirmed the urgent need to accelerate action to protect at least 30% of the planet by 2030. More and more organisations are committing to achieving biodiversity protection targets, also as part of the Nature Positive agenda.

Newmont is the world’s leading gold company and producer of copper, zinc, lead, and silver, with operations in Africa, Australia, Latin America & Caribbean, North America, and Papua New Guinea . The Company has a stated goal of no net loss of key biodiversity values (KBVs) in its areas of influence and aims to contribute to the Nature Positive ambition.

Since 2018, our partnership with ϲʿֱֳ has been an integral part of Newmont’s biodiversity management program and has supported our commitment to No Net Loss. The ϲʿֱֳ Biodiversity net gain reviews have served to improve and shape the positive outcomes of the projects, provide transparency, and assure alignment with internal and external stakeholders,

said Briana Gunn, Newmont Group Head, Environment.

The collaboration extension will give further insight into how Newmont can meet or exceed our biodiversity commitments as we build and implement our Nature Positive Strategy.”

Data gathered through the reviews provide an evaluation of biodiversity programs and result in recommendations for improvement and future direction that are used for knowledge sharing with ϲʿֱֳ members. Such data can also help identify opportunities for contributions to National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in countries of operations and to the Nature Positive goal.

There is a growing support from the private sector for the ‘Nature Positive’ goal to halt and reverse the loss of nature, and there is still considerable scope for the mining sector to mainstream biodiversity conservation into their operations in a meaningful way.”

saidSusanne Pedersen, Director of ϲʿֱֳ’s Centre for Science and Knowledge

However, it is important that leading companies such as Newmont adhere to best practice standards at all level of the organisation and keep abreast of the latest scientific developments – such as ϲʿֱֳ's Approach to Measuring Nature Positive – in order to design biodiversity management programmes with positive outcomes for the planet and people.”
