Neil Cumberlidge is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Northern Michigan University. He is the former Department Head of Biology, and he holds two earned doctorates. He has dual nationality (UK and USA). EDUCATION D.Sc. In Freshwater Crab Biology, Hull University, Hull, UK. Ph.D. in Animal Physiology, Hull University, Hull, UK. Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Biology) (P.G.C.Ed.), University of Durham, UK.B.SC. (Hons.) in Zoology, Hull University, Hull, UK TEACHING He taught Biology in the UK and Nigeria before joining the faculty at NMU. He has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in Physiology and Anatomy (BI510 Advanced Human Physiology; BI427 Ecological Animal Physiology; BI327 Animal Physiology; BI202 Human Physiology; BI201 Human Anatomy; BI104 Human Anatomy & Physiology), Evolution (BI215 Evolution; BI520 Systematics), and Ecology (BI210 Principles of Ecology; GC101 Environmental Conservation). RESEARCH His research interests focus on the taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny, evolution, biogeography, and conservation of African and Madagascan freshwater crabs. He has carried out research projects in a number of countries around the work including the UK, Nigeria, Liberia, South Africa, Singapore, Thailand, and Denmark. Publications. He has produced more than 160 published products including taxonomic monographs, species descriptions, biodiversity inventories, endangered species Red Lists, conservation assessments, molecular and morphological phylogenies, evolutionary studies, biogeographical treatments, taxonomic studies, parasitological works, and encyclopedia articles. He has named 67 new species and 16 new genera of freshwater crabs. STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN RESEARCH He has directed PhD and MS thesis research in crustacean systematics (taxonomy, morphological cladistics, molecular phylogenetics), physiology, conservation, and ecology. He has also supervised undergraduate and graduate research on various projects at NMU and in Denmark, Thailand, South Africa, Cameroon, and Nigeria.
