Knowing Nature: new conservation technologies and knowledge systems to support the SDGs and post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
The event will bring together leading scientists, technology innovators and users to illustrate how new technologies are already and have the potential to further advance global conservation goals and targets.
Progress towards achieving SDGs 14 and 15 has been uneven and, in many aspects, less than encouraging. Yet, living in harmony with nature is a central objective of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This Knowledge Dialogue/HLPF Side Event will explore a set of promising scientific and technological innovations that are contributing to assessing and conserving nature, and can potentially contribute towards enhanced success in achieving SDGs 14 and 15 and the goals and targets to be adopted as part of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).聽
The technologies to be presented include AI and machine learning, networked sensors, environmental DNA, restoration drones, lasers and lidar, as well as systems combining traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) with morphometrics and聽AI.聽
These innovations can support the monitoring of the health of ecosystems and species as well as contributing directly to ecosystem restoration and species protection.聽
The panel presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.聽
