RESULT Asia-Pacific framework launches to restore and sustain 100 million hectares of degraded landscapes
Bangkok, Thailand, 11 December 2024: RESULT Asia-Pacific, a regional restoration programme framework was established today to immediately support 20 countries across Asia and the Pacific in their efforts to restore and sustainably manage 100 million hectares of degraded forests, agricultural land, urban areas and other landscapes across the region. This will in turn support countries in fulfilling their restoration commitments under the three Rio Conventions on climate change, combating desertification and biodiversity.
The framework, supported by 38 partners in total, is currently led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 (International Union for Conservation of Nature). The launch event took place in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together participants from governments, investors, civil society, Indigenous peoples organisations and other stakeholders.
鈥淲e鈥檙e extremely worried about what鈥檚 visible to our eyes, but what we鈥檙e not worried about is what鈥檚 invisible,鈥 said H.E Musadik Masood Malik, Federal Minister for Water Resources, Pakistan, as he emphasised the importance of focusing greater attention on soil and water.
H.E Marcos da Cruz, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Forestry, Timor-Leste, stressed, 鈥淲e are committed to restoring our degraded ecosystems, especially the mangroves that we need to bring back to support the livelihoods of our people while delivering various environmental benefits for the country and the world.鈥
H.E John Dahmasing Salong, Minister of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology & Geo-Hazards, Energy, Environment, and Disaster Management, Vanuatu, noted that RESULT Asia-Pacific is 鈥渁 step in the right direction鈥 towards attaining sustainable development.
Asia and the Pacific is home to 4.3 billion people and is experiencing rapid economic growth, accompanied by a rising demand for food and natural resources. However, over 500 million hectares of land and natural resources in the region are degraded. These degraded landscapes provide reduced goods and ecosystem services, undermining food security, livelihood opportunities and resilience to climate change.
To address such challenges, RESULT Asia-Pacific will focus on below components:
- National forest and landscape restoration (FLR) plans and targets
- Regional dialogue, learning, collaboration and coordinated action on FLR
- Recognition for and support use of various technical, institutional and social approaches suited to context
- Mobilisation of financing for FLR
- Private sector participation and investment in FLR
- Smallholder and community action and benefit from FLR
The launch event is followed by the first RESULT Asia-Pacific Investment Forum from 11 鈥 12 December. This hybrid event marks the beginning of a series aimed at mobilising investments under RESULT Asia-Pacific to scale up restoration efforts. The Forum highlights:
i) lessons learned from large regional initiatives in Africa, Latin America and Asia,
ii) donor and investor priorities, along with innovative financing mechanisms for restoration, and
iii) initiatives led by the RESULT Asia-Pacific Implementers鈥 Network.
Approximately 15 national and regional projects are showcased during the Forum, primarily presented by representatives from the target countries.
