An intense day for biodiversity: 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 busy with the EU Green Week, and MEPs discussing on the CAP
Tuesday 21 October was a听remarkably听busy day for the 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 European Regional Office, in the context of the EU Green Week 2020. EU Biodiversity Targets for Protected Areas and Nature Restoration at the top of the Agenda听
In听the morning, during the session 鈥溾 speakers from diverse backgrounds shared their perspectives about听the听current challenges and opportunities for reaching the targets set out in the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, and about the importance of the targets for biodiversity and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Alberto Arroyo Schnell, Senior Manager Policy and Programme at the 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 European Regional Office,听focused his panel intervention on the need to use the already functioning and well-known tools,听to focus our energy on the implementation, the real challenge. 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 tools, such as the听Green List Standard, the听香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 Protected Areas Management Categories听or the听听补苍诲听Ecosystems听can be extremely helpful in this context.听To prevent听failure听we had听in achieving听the previous biodiversity targets,听we need inclusivity to ensure that all stakeholders are fully involved in the discussion for the designation of further PAs and their management. One year听ahead of听the approval of the Global Biodiversity Framework in the context of the Convention of Biological Diversity, the EU can set an example for the global dimension; the EU PAs targets are achievable, we now need听the听financial resources and strong political will to ensure good implementation.听
Thomas Brooks,听Chief Scientist for the International Union for Conservation of Nature听participated听in听the 鈥溾 session,听which听introduced听the听planned European Partnership听鈥楻escuing Biodiversity to Safeguard Life on Earth鈥.听听
In the early afternoon, our Director Luc Bas participated听in听the听鈥溾 session, a partner event听by听WWF and UNEP.听This session focused on the discussion around the role of nature restoration in tackling the environmental challenges we are facing, opportunities in key sectors including repurposing agricultural subsidies to support nature-positive food systems and climate action as part of countries鈥櫶齟fforts to build back better, and听the potential role听for EU and global policy in restoring natural ecosystems for the benefit of people and听the听planet and听in听support听of听a green, resilient recovery.听Luc Bas addressed the lack of commitment听with respect to听the Bonn Challenge, promoting Nature-based Solutions as a win-win for society and environment, and the need听to听improve joint financing for climate and biodiversity, as well as听include natural capital accounting.听The restoration听of nature cannot be an excuse for not implementing strong protection mechanisms.听
At the same time, Barbara听Pia听Ober膷, Policy Officer at the 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 European Regional Office, presented our听report 鈥Approaches to sustainable agriculture鈥, during the 鈥溾.听
The European Commission also launched a new听, in order to support the EU Biodiversity听Strategy听for 2030 and听its associated Action Plan. In addition,听the first ever听听came out yesterday;听the report presents an ecosystem assessment covering the total land area of the EU as well as the EU marine regions, carried out by听the听Joint Research Centre, European Environment Agency, DG Environment, and the European Topic Centres on Biological Diversity and on Urban, Land and Soil Systems.听
While听the EU Green听Week was taking听place, the听European Parliament听rejected the amendment to integrate the EU Green Deal targets into the future听Common听Agricultural听Policy听and voted in听favour听of compromise proposals put forward by the European People's Party, the Socialists and Democrats and the Renew Europe group.听The EP听voted against an emissions-reduction target for agriculture of 30%听by听2027 and听rejected听protecting grasslands and peatlands.听This vote has been defined a听听to nature and听to the Farm to Fork strategy.听
Earlier in the morning,听EU ministers听had听agreed on the proposal from the German听presidency of the Council of the EU听to听,听that will not become binding until 2025.听This 20% for the greening of agriculture is too little for the ambitious plan that the EU Green Deal set out;听the delay in the implementation of the eco-schemes is just another slowdown in the biodiversity鈥檚 path to recovery.听听
Tomorrow,听the EU Environmental Ministers will meet and agree on a common position on the way forward for biodiversity: we hope their conclusions will signal a strong ambition of the EU towards the achievement of the biodiversity goals.听
