With the current conservation finance gap being estimated at over USD 800 billion a year (according to ), it is crucial to find and promote new and innovative solutions to fund conservation globally. “Large-scale and widespread investment in Nature-based Solutions would help us to address biodiversity loss and significantly contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, not to mention wider economic benefits, including creating jobs,” says  published in February 2021. 

The  (BNCFF) has released providing examples on how to integrate Blue Natural Capital (BNC) restoration and conservation into sustainable business models. The aim of the Blue Prints is to inspire and foster opportunities for scaling-up and replication of BNC projects globally.

Based on existing BNC projects, each Blue Print puts forward a possible Nature-based Solution and corresponding business model to tackle a conservation problem alongside climate change. Each explores the positive impacts and required environmental and social safeguards, the roles and needs of relevant stakeholders as well as a suggested investment structure. Blue scalability and replicability are also considered, alongside practical tips for successful implementation. 

From sustainable fishing and farming to carbon credits, the Blue Prints cover a variety of potential income streams and key topics that are relevant to BNC projects, such as eco-tourism, blue infrastructure and improving access to local and global markets.
