Mr Eduardo P. FERNANDEZ
Biologist (botany), Conservation Scientist, Explorer and acting Project Manager of the Conservation Assessment Unit - NuAC, at the Brazilian National Centre for Flora Conservation – CNCFlora in Rio de Janeiro Botanic Garden; I hold a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Santa Úrsula, Brazil (2012) and a Master's degree in Plant Diversity from the University of Reading, UK (2016). My areas of expertise lies in botany, conservation biology, landscape ecology, conservation genetics of Threatened plants and phytogeography. Member of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ SSC Plant Conservation Committee, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ SSC South America and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ SSC Species Monitoring Specialist Group. Assessing and managing the extinction risk assessment of the Brazilian flora is my main task as Co-Chair of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Species Survival Commission Brazil Plant Red List Authority (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ SSC BP-RLA). My research has made substantial contributions to the understanding of species extinction risk, conservation planning, and the preservation of the Brazilian plant diversity both in and ex situ. Part of my daily activities also consists in go out to the field to track back putative lost species and to monitor population sizes/trends and habitat shifts for Brazilian Threatened/Near Threatened plants.

More about the Specialist Group
In a megadiverse country, where native vegetation is being converted or fragmented, conservation actions involving government agencies and local actors must be developed. Thus, by 2020, the Brazil Plant Red List Authority (BP-RLA) will participate in the elaboration of National Action Plans for threatened species with a focus on Critically Endangered species that do not currently benefit from conservation mechanisms.
Specialist Group work
Increase knowledge about the state of conservation of Brazilian endemic flora. The focus of extinction risk assessments will be on endemic tree species that occur throughout the country, especially those occurring in territories that have a small number of conservation mechanisms.Â
To inform conservation efforts, BP-RLA assesses species for the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Red List of Threatened Species.
