Dr Nicole DUPLAIX
Dr. Nicole Duplaix is a Senior Instructor at Oregon State University’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. She received her master’s and doctorate degrees in Biology and Ecology from the University of Paris-Orsay, France. She conducted her doctoral research on the giant otters of Suriname, the first time this endangered species had been studied in the wild. She has studied otters and explored river systems worldwide for 55 years and now focuses on otter research and conservation in Asia and South America. She is the founder and Chair of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥-SSC Otter Specialist Group – the authority in global otter conservation. She co-founded TRAFFIC and headed its Washington DC office -- this organization monitors and documents the international trade in endangered and protected species. She is a long-time contract photographer/writer the for National Geographic Society.

The Otter Specialist Group (OSG) is one of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Species Survival Commission’s specialist groups. Its goals are:
- to provide leadership for the conservation of all 13 otter species
- to determine, review and share on a continuing basis the status, threats and needs of otters worldwide and update the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Red List
- to promote the wise management of otters in the wild and in captivity through ongoing collaboration with zoos and the publication of studbooks and husbandry manuals
- to present and promote the new research, conservation and management programs necessary to insure the recovery of threatened and endangered otter populations
- to train and mentor a new generation of otter researchers
- to present and promote actions to curb the illegal trade and decrease otter-fishermen

The aims of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ SSC Otter Specialist Group are to provide leadership for the conservation of all otter species (Lutrinae), determine and review on a continuing basis the status and needs of otters, and promote the implementation of necessary research, conservation and management programmes by appropriate individuals, organisations and governments, and make known the status and conservation needs of otters, promoting the wise management of otter species.

Otters face both known and emerging threats. OSG studies these at local and global levels.
OSG assesses species for the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Red List of Threatened Species to inform conservation efforts.
