In southeastern Europe the group had an important impact for the conservation of pelicans by reducing hunting mortality due to electric power lines and by building artificial nest platforms on rafts.

The Pelican Specialist Group (Old World and New World Sections) exists to carry out, support and promote scientific research and conservation activities aimed at Old World and New World pelicans and enhance cooperation and diffusion of knowledge.

Pelicans face both known and emerging threats. PSG studies these at local and global levels.
