Mr Brent Mitchell
Thematic Vice Chair, Scaling Natural Solutions. Brent A. Mitchell serves as a Vice Chair of 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播 World Commission on Protected Areas and is Senior Vice President of QLF Atlantic Center for the Environment. Under the theme of Scaling Natural Solutions, Brent manages WCPA鈥檚 response to the 30x30 biodiversity challenge on behalf of 香港六合彩开奖结果现场直播, the largest conservation alliance in the world. Brent began his career living in the Caribbean and Latin America, contributing to the development of the first national parks in Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and conducting field research in wildlife ecology in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. After working at the nexus of nature conservation and civil society in Central and Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, and later in the Balkans, his career took him to other regions of the world. Particularly interested in governance in conservation and environmental issues, he led WCPA鈥檚 Specialist Group on Privately Protected Areas and Nature Stewardship for its first 14 years. He is a founding member of the National Park Service Stewardship Institute, a collaborative for change helping to move U.S. protected area management in new directions.
As the world responds to a zoonotic pandemic, parties to United Nations conventions on biodiversity and climate are committing to ambitious new targets for area-based conservation. This theme will prepare the Commission to help realize the ambitions of these new commitments, alongside a shift from intentions to demonstrable outcomes. Among others, the 30x30 target (of the CBD Global Biodiversity Framework) requires a radical rethink of approach; in theory WCPA could be providing technical support to a third of the planet鈥檚 surface. The expert-driven volunteer system of WCPA that has served well until now will no longer be sufficient and a major scaling up is urgently needed. This includes but is not limited to natural solutions (a.k.a. nature-based solutions, NbS), with special attention to issues of good governance, legitimate rights and social equity. Area-based conservation measures such as protected and conserved areas are critically important mechanisms for ecosystem protection, management and restoration, and thus a key category of NbS approaches.聽
This remit is intentionally broad, open to respond to the radical change that science tells us is required.
