Established in 2019, in Hertfordshire, this Center hired a species officer, Andrea Dempsey to create a central database of all native conservation efforts by all parties and to highlight gaps in the conservation cycle for a species in need.Ìý

About our work

The Center’s focus is to create and maintain a stakeholders map of all key actors in native species conservation across the UK and by doing so identify gaps in conservation efforts.Ìý

It is then the Center's objective to work closely with the British Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA) to engage its members to fill these identified gaps, supporting one or all three elements of the Species Conservation Cycle - assess-plan-act. ÌýBIAZA members are an untapped resource of experts, finances and educational space which when mobilized can all contribute to the Reverse the Red movement.

In addition, Andrea works with the Red List Unit in Cambridge to deliver Red List training and with the government body, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) to support their Red List assessment objectives.Ìý

Support our native wildlife

At Hertfordshire Zoo (Formerly Paradise Wildlife Park), we support our native wildlife in various ways. We actively work with other UK (BIAZA) institutions to help conserve our native species. Such as our European hedgehog population through our rehabilitation and release program.

We are engaging our staff, volunteers and visitors

We are engaging our staff, volunteers and visitors in the ‘Spotted on Site’ campaign encouraging them to find, identify and therefore learn more about the British species which call our site home.  Also, our physical initiatives such as native species gardens and tree planting which helps provide biodiversity on site.

Spreading viral conservation stories

At Hertfordshire Zoo, we are one of the industry leaders in digital marketing and helping to spread viral conservation stories via our social media platforms to over half a million followers.

Andrea Dempsey
Andrea Dempsey

Species Survival Officer

Andrea is working as aÌýSpecies Survival OfficerÌýat the Center for Species Survival UK based at Hertfordshire Zoo, one day a week. Andrea has worked in the zoological sector since 2004 and obtained an MSc in Primate Conservation in 2014 before relocating to Ghana in the same year, returning to the UK in 2019. Since returning Andrea has been assisting the Red List Unit in Cambridge and the red list government body in their assessment process. ÌýNow Andrea is working with BIAZA to faciliate their contribution to the RtR movement through the Conservation Cycle. ÌýAndrea is the ISB/EEP Coordinator for Cercopithecus diana and the Vice Chair of the EAZA Afro-Eurasisan Taxon Advisory Group.
