I currently hold the position of Director of Impact for Conserve Global, providing strategic oversight for business information systems, monitoring and impact evaluation, and scientific management. 

 

My work bridges the domains of science, management, and policy, and promotes practical evidence鈥恇ased research as the basis for effective and impactful strategies to conserve Africa鈥檚 rich biodiversity. With an early career focused on large carnivore conservation, I am passionate about the role of conservation evidence and applied science in driving effective action. I also understand that good decision making is both a science and an art! Born and raised in Zimbabwe, I spent more than two decades at the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa, driving its strategic direction and later building its Conservation Planning and Science Unit. I joined Conserve Global in July 2022.

Brent began his career living in the Caribbean and Latin America, contributing to the development of the first national parks in Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and conducting field research in wildlife ecology in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. An ecologist by training, Karen has over thirty years’ professional experience in the environmental field in Canada and internationally, both in the private sector and with the Canadian government. During 15 years with Parks Canada, Karen led the development of evidence-based strategic approaches to ecological restoration, climate change, and urban parks, among other topics. Most recently, she has been bridging natural and social-scientific disciplines to develop collaborative relationships and find solutions for building and diversifying the constituency of support for conservation.

With more than 20 years of experience in Protected Areas and other area-based conservation measures in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and South Africa, Paola has an on-the-ground understanding of different protected area models. She has worked with national protected area agencies, national and international Civil Society Organizations (Wildlife Conservation Society, World Wildlife Fund), and local communities. Through her work, she seeks to improve biodiversity conservation outcomes and associated benefits. She has developed innovative approaches to implement adaptive management within systems of protected areas. Paola promotes the use of meetings between Agencies of Protected Areas on the topic of adaptive management, considering these exchanges as a strategy to support innovations, and contribute to an effective management of protected areas and protected area systems. Since 2017, Paola has been part of the Green List Expert Assessment Group (EAGL) for Peru. She joined Foundations of Success in 2019 and provides coaching in adaptive management and conservation effectiveness to teams across the globe. She has a master's in environmental sciences (Uruguay), Master in Conservation and Biodiversity Management in the Tropics (Spain) and Bachelor in Tourism with a major in Ecotourism (Ecuador).

Thematic Vice Chair, Science and Biodiversity. Stephen Woodley is an ecologist, who has worked in the field of protected areas for 35 years. He worked as a consultant, a field biologist, manager of a national fire restoration program and forest ecologist before becoming the first Chief Scientist for Parks Canada in 1992. In that position he worked on a number of issues related to protected areas, including ecological monitoring, species at risk, wildlife disease, ecological restoration and science policy. In July, 2011, Stephen began working as Senior Advisor to the Global Protected Areas Program of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and continues that work as Co-Chair of the Task Force on Biodiversity and Protected Areas, jointly established by the World Commission on Protected Areas and the Species Survival Commission.

Fabrice Stephenson is a marine ecologist from France and the United Kingdom. He has primarily worked on understanding the distribution and ecology of organisms that live on or near the seafloor. Using statistical modelling approaches, he has developed science that aims to inform strategic policy approaches to managing the marine environment, in particular the development of marine spatial plans. Using a systematic conservation planning approach, he has contributed both as a researcher and then as the New Zealand Head of Delegation, to the science that informed the development of a marine spatial plan for deepwater fisheries in the South Pacific RFMO area while mitigating the impacts of bottom fisheries to Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs). From 2020 鈥 2023 he co-led an interdisciplinary research project ( Communicating risk and uncertainty to aid decision-making, University of Waikato, New Zealand) which aimed to develop decision-making practices that were more inclusive and multi-sectorial and that explicitly identify risk and knowledge uncertainty in a way that reduces risks to ecological, social, cultural and economic wellbeing. He is currently undertaking a 5-year interdisciplinary research fellowship at Newcastle University which aims to develop improved approaches for estimating spatial distributions of ecosystem services under a changing climate and how these data can inform coherent, efficient and equitable resource management.

He has worked in conservation for more than 14 years, and currently focuses on global or multilateral policy frameworks addressing biodiversity, protected areas and OECMs, wildlife trade, migratory species, pandemics of zoonotic origin, climate change, food systems, and more. He has engaged with more than 30 World Heritage sites through the work of WCS, with wider experience through engagement on other sites and on cross-cutting issues with World Heritage decision-making fora. He co-chairs working groups convened under the WCPA on topics such as OECMs, and he has also co-authored papers in scientific and policy journals on protected and conserved areas, forest integrity, and more. Alfred holds a B.A. in environmental studies and literature from Connecticut College and a Masters in public policy and administration, focusing on international environmental law and governance, from Columbia University.
