The Rio Doce Panel is an Independent Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (ISTAP), a valuable tool managed by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ to address controversial conservation and development issues to produce scientifically robust and equitable solutions. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ convened the Panel in September 2017 to deliver technical and scientific recommendations to the Renova Foundation and other actors involved in restoring the Rio Doce watershed, following the Fundão Dam failure, in Mariana Minas Gerais on 5 November 2015. The Panel's objective is to assess and advise on the work undertaken in the region with a focus on long-term ecosystem health and resilience and the promotion of sustainable social and economic development.

The Rio Doce Panel provides independent expert scientific advice and guidance to the Renova Foundation through recommendations featured on knowledge reports aiming to enhance the design and implementation of the Framework Agreement (TTAC) programs and measures by Fundação Renova focused on the delivery of optimal outcomes for the environment and people in the Rio Doce Basin. The ISTAP's deliberations are independent and free from real or perceived conflicts of interest, and the Panel of experts works on existing international and national best practices and new knowledge.
The Rio Doce ISTAP aims to challenge the Renova Foundation to develop and implement an integrated, outcomes-based strategy and to encourage innovative and long-term solutions to optimise resources and lead to the best possible social and conservation outcomes.
Transparency and engagement are central to the operation of the ISTAP. Information is science-driven and evidence-based, and the Panel's reports and recommendations are publicly available. Engagement with interested and affected stakeholders is integral to the ISTAP process.
The Panel's vision is the long-term environmental and socio-economic health and resilience of the Rio Doce basin and adjoining coastal zone. This vision shall be achieved through an approach that is nature-based, integrative, grounded in the landscape, and will make the watershed known as a model for others.
