SIDA-funded programme of work on the problem of plastic pollution in the marine environment. The project will work on two priority regions: East Africa and Asia-Pacific.
The project has four components:
1. Understanding the state and impact of plastic pollution in the Indian Ocean and Asia Pacific Regions
2. Local and Regional capacity building to facilitate National Action Plans
3. Supporting national and regional policy frameworks and legislative reform processes to address plastic pollution
4. Engaging and mobilizing business actors in the support of effective management and reduction of plastic pollution

MARPLASTICCs’ objective is to equip Governments, industry and society in Eastern and Southern Africa and the Asia Pacific regions with knowledge, capacity, policy options and plans of action to contain and reduce marine plastic pollution. The project aims to achieve this through four interconnected core outputs:

1. Knowledge: enhancing the understanding the state and impact of plastic pollution in the Indian Ocean and Asia Pacific regions;
2. Capacity: facilitating national action to control plastic pollution through local and regional capacity building;
3. Policy: supporting national and regional policy frameworks and legislative reform processes to address plastics;
4. Business: engaging and mobilising business actors in support of effective management and reduction of plastic pollution.
