Logme news: 350 farmers’ livelihoods supported in 8 communities within upper East and upper West regions of Ghana

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥) is implementing in Burkina, Ghana and Niger, a project titled: Creating Lands of Opportunity: Transforming Livelihoods through Landscape Restoration in the Sahel.

The 3-years project (2020-2023) is funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea through the Global Mechanism of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The Project seeks to make a significant and sustainable contribution towards landscape restoration in the Sahel while creating income-generating activities for local communities in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger. One key output of the project is to ensure that Economic opportunities are offered in occupations that have a positive impact on land fertility, agricultural productivity, riverbank protection, landscapes and ecosystem services.

In Ghana, 350 farmers have benefitted within the first year of the project from Agricultural inputs such as maize, soya beans, organic and inorganic fertilizers as well as tree seedlings (Mangoes, Cashew, Eucalyptus, Mahogany and Cassia) for restoration on 200 hectares within 8 communities in 4 Districts. The communities are; Dalaasa, Naadema (Builsa South District); Yamerga, Awaredone (Talensi District); Tarikom, Gbango (Bawku West District) Nanchala and Sakalu (Sisala East District) located in Upper East and Upper West Regions. The beneficiaries include 184 Women and 166 Male Youths. The Inputs were provided to the beneficiary farmers from 14th-27th July 2021 and facilitated by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥, Environmental Protection Agency-EPA and Ministry of Food and Agriculture-MOFA.
