In the technical sessionsof the seminar, the experts dealt with specific issues like the impact on Pakistan,Ìý andÌý new concepts like the Clean Development Mechanisms which countries like Pakistan need to take advantage of to put in place adaptaion and mitigation measures for Climate Change. This was emphasised in view of the fact that Pakistan ranks 125th on the list of global polluters but 12th on the list of countries that will be impacted negatively by Climate Change.

Welcoming the guests, The ViceÌý Chancellor of the University, Abdul Hameed Bajoi elaborated on the efforts of the nascent educational institution towards the understanding of the issues specific to Balochistan. He acknowledged the support received by the University from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Pakistan which had provided research and training to its students, and had collaborated in the conduct of the seminar.

Head of the Balochistan Partnerships for Sustainable Development of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥, Zabardast Khan Bangash called the attention of the seminar participants to the impacts of Climate Change on various parts of Pakistan, and warned that this was one great leveler that has cross cutting impacts on livelihoods and ecology. He emphasized that Climate Change was not a matter of sustainability but of survival, so it was imperative that measures be taken to combat its effects.

In his keynote address, M. Munir Sheikh of the Global Change Impacts Studies Institute shared hisÌý research with the audience, clearly showing the global impact of climate change with examples specific to Pakistan, like the change in seasons, crop patters, rainfall and weather phenomenon like storms, floods and extended periods of droughts.

Country Representative of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Pakistan, Shah Murad Aliani explained the role of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ in providing a platform for sharing of research and measures that can lead to adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of Climate Change.

In his address, the Chief Guest at the seminar, Ghulam Jan Baloch, The Minister for Environment Government of Balochistan, strongly urged organizations like Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ and the University to raise awareness about this burning issue across the province so that people who will be facing the impacts can prepare themselves better and take advantage of the research that is being conducted by the experts.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his government to taking measures for the betterment of the people and called upon the academia and scientific experts to join hands in putting forward solutions and alternatives so for the common man could not only brace himself against the impacts but can also combat its effects.
