The webinar will take placeÌýon 7 May at 15h (GMT+2) and will address the question: how to bring together data from many different sources,ÌýtoÌýgenerate useful evidence for conservationÌýand make it accessible to decision makers?

The aims at improving the long-term conservation and sustainable development in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific countries. The better use and monitoring of information on biodiversity and protected areas is a key component of this programme.ÌýIn Eastern and Southern Africa, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission are working together with the Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) to establish a Regional resource hub for protected areas and biodiversity. This regional resource hub will provide a variety of services to the regional conservation actors, including data analysis, products development for monitoring and reporting, and supporting decision-making in the region.

The speakers forÌýthis webinar include:

  • Dr Tiwonge I. Mzumara - Gawa, Lecturer in EcologyÌýat theÌýMalawi University of Science and Technology, and ornithologist at Museums of Malawi. Dr Gawa will present key results and lessons learnt from theÌýMapping Biodiversity PrioritiesÌýprojectÌýfor Malawi.
  • Beryl Nyamgeroh,Ìý BIOPAMA technical officer and developer for Eastern and Southern Africa.ÌýMs. Nyamgeroh will explainÌýhow RCMRD's spatial data expertise and infrastructure can support biodiversity-relevant data sharing and re-use in the BIOPAMA Regional Resource Hub.
  • Ngugi Kimani, Global Information Technology Lead at RCMRD. Mr Kimani participates in the arrangement of data and applications systematically to provide convenient access for all and he manages RCMRD servers and datasets.
  • DrÌýLucy Bastin, Developer and analyst forÌýthe Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. Dr. Bastin is the JRCÌýfocal point for the BIOPAMA programme in EasternÌýAfrica.

The Mapping Biodiversity Priorities project isÌýfunded by the Japan Biodiversity Fund within the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and is managed by UN Environment-WCMC with support from SANBI.
