“Mediterranean Solutions” – an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate nature-based recovery at at ϲʿֱֳ Congress

In a critical moment for the Mediterranean basin and after a summer of extreme weather events, 12 conservation organizations will be joining forces for the first time at the World Conservation Congress held in Marseille from 4th to 9th September. The “Mediterranean Solutions” stand will host a series of on-site and online events to mobilise action for a nature-based recovery across the region.

Making peace with nature

Under the leadership of the , the organisations , , , the ϲʿֱֳ Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, , , , , , and will be gathering at the ϲʿֱֳ Congress to present the current challenges, accomplishments, new initiatives and collaborative work which are taking place in the Mediterranean region.

Each of these organisations harnesses different skills, operational structures and approaches. However, they all share the same goal: to kickstart a nature-based recovery across the Mediterranean, and get on course for a sustainable, equitable future that balances economic growth and the health of the natural world.

Marseille, a city exemplifying the challenges of Mediterranean societies

In a region where climate change is happening 20% faster than in the rest of the world, the recent heat waves and devastating wildfires experienced this summer are clear signs of the need for urgent and orchestrated action. In the region, societes are heading towards a collision with nature. Two seminal reports published in 2020, , and the shed light on the impacts of the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution on the Mediterranean. 

During the 6 days, the sessions at the Mediterranean stand will explore solutions to the key environmental issues in the region, including Nature-based solutions, inclusive processes to support inclusivity and effective and equitable governance, as well as an analysis of the current funding landscape.

This Congress will be the first hybrid in-person and virtual environmental event since the pandemic began, the Mediterranean stand will provide streaming service for most of the live events scheduled by this innovative collaboration.
