Thursday 12 November has been designated as Oceans, Coastal Zones and , a full-day event with international water experts and thought leaders focusing on how water can help us in tackling the climate crisis. Matt Damon, actor and co-founder of and will join Water Day by video to make a statement along with high-level speakers including Inger Andersen of UNEP, climate expert Johan Rockström, South African youth activist Akhona Xotyeni, Pope Francis’ climate advisor Cardinal Peter Turkson and China’s leading environmentalist Ma Jun.

Rapid breakthroughs are pushing eight key sectors closer to the tipping points necessary to reach zero emissions by 2050 and avert the worst impacts of climate change. Under the leadership of the Champions, these Pathways have been produced by the *.

The Climate Action Pathways’ roadmap to a zero-carbon economy includes the following targets for water:

• Doubling the share of sustainable renewable energy used in water extraction, supply, treatment and reuse by 2025
• Water and wastewater utilities fully decarbonised and climate resilience improved through climate risk management by 2030
• 30% of Earth’s water-related natural ecosystems protected and restored by 2030
