SSC Leaders Meeting

Background

In February 2008, the leadership of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Species Survival Commission (SSC) met in Abu Dhabi for the first of a series of transformative meetings which heavily influenced the functioning, growth, and integration of species conservation work across both Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ and the SSC.

A second meeting in February 2012, served to consolidate the SSC Leaders’ Meeting as a central feature of planning, thinking and cooperating within SSC and with the other components of the Union and beyond.

The meeting provided an open platform for all Specialist Group (SG), stand-alone Red List Authority (RLA), and Task Force Chairs in the SSC and the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûÏÖ³¡Ö±²¥ Global Species Programme to meet, share their experiences, and discuss ways forward on key conservation issues.

Held every four years, this meeting aims at leveraging the expertise and experience of the SSC Groups to facilitate knowledge-sharing and collective action, with the ultimate goal of advancing the mission of species conservation.

Leaders' Meeting 2015

In 2015 more than 300 conservation experts gathered for the SSC Leaders' Meeting. The meeting took place in Abu Dhabi from September 15th to 18th and was supported by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD). During the meeting, the leaders renewed their commitment to preserving the diversity of life on Earth in all its magnificence, wonder, and beauty. They issued a to this effect.

Leaders' Meeting 2019

The Fourth SSC Leaders Meeting, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from October 6th to 9th, 2019, was organised in alliance with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD). During this meeting, emphasising conservation action for species as a shared responsibility. 

appeals to the world’s governments to take emergency measures to save those species at the highest risk of extinction and tackle key threats that are driving population declines and extinctions.
