The CBD Women’s Caucus is a trailblazer in embedding gender justice within biodiversity policies, exemplifying a transformative model of shared leadership. Comprising around 600 members from diverse cultural, age, and professional backgrounds, the Caucus harnesses this rich tapestry of perspectives to drive impactful change in global conservation efforts.
Central to their advocacy is the urgent need to integrate gender equality into biodiversity action. Women and girls play crucial roles in managing and preserving natural resources, yet their contributions have often been overlooked. The Caucus addresses this gap by ensuring that gender considerations are woven into the fabric of biodiversity strategies.
The Caucus’s collaborative approach has led to several historic milestones. In 2008, they achieved the adoption of the first Gender Plan of Action at CBD COP9, marking a pivotal step towards recognizing gender issues in biodiversity. Their advocacy continued with the successful lobbying for the Second Gender Plan of Action at COP12 in 2014, which included secured resources for its implementation.
In 2018, at CBD COP14, the Caucus advocated for a gender-responsive Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, ensuring gender considerations were integrated into both its development and implementation. Their groundbreaking achievement at COP15 in 2022 further solidified their leadership, with the inclusion of a stand-alone gender equality target (T23) within the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and a robust Gender Plan of Action.
The CBD Women’s Caucus’s journey underscores the power of inclusive leadership in shaping equitable biodiversity policies. Their continued advocacy ensures that gender justice remains a core component of global conservation efforts, paving the way for a more just and sustainable future.
